Early polling shows a surprising
level support for the North Colorado: 51st State Initiative
By Jeffrey T. Hare
Three early
polls show a surprising level support for the “North Colorado:
51st State Initiative.” All three polls, although unscientific, show a
significant plurality of residents in Colorado’s northern communities either support
the formation of a new state entirely, or believe that such an initiative sends
a strong message to elected officials in Denver. In the Greeley Tribune Poll, support for
legal separation of eight Northern Colorado Counties from the State of Colorado is as high as
53% (60% if you include the sarcastic “We should become our own country” option
offered by the Tribune) a remarkable level of support for what some may consider a
controversial effort. While much of the political and journalistic
establishment in Denver has dismissed and ridiculed the 51st State
movement, these polls should cause some in Denver to reconsider their
relationship with large segments of Colorado’s rural population.
Currently the 51st State Initiative is focused on eight counties: Weld, Morgan, Logan, Sedgwick, Phillips, Washington, Yuma and Kit Carson. However, Weld County Commissioners have stated that they welcome other counties to join the movement. Citizens from throughout rural Colorado are encouraged to contact their County’s Board of County Commissioners to voice their support for being a part of the 51st State Initiative.

CAN THE RESIDENTS OF THE WESTERN SLOPE ALSO JOIN THE NEW STATE OR ATTACH OURSELVES TO WYOMING OR UTAH. WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THE FRONT RANGE ELITIST CLASS.
ReplyDeleteCan we split Arapahoe County down the middle (East/West)? If so, I would like to be part of the 51st State.
